Over the past few years, a wave of bold, data-backed initiatives has been quietly reshaping the continent’s future from mega dams powering millions to solar grids lighting up rural communities. These are not just projects. They’re signals of where the future is being built.

1. Ethiopia: Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, located on the Blue Nile, was officially inaugurated on September 9, 2025, marking the completion of a 14-year construction journey that began in April 2011.

  • Impact: As Africa’s largest hydroelectric dam, it is designed to provide electricity to the 45% of Ethiopia’s population currently living without power. It also serves as an economic engine, intended to generate foreign income through the sale of surplus electricity to neighboring countries.
  • Financing: The project, costing approximately £3.8 billion ($4 billion+), is a significant milestone in self-sufficiency; it was financed entirely by Ethiopians at home and in the diaspora without relying on IMF or World Bank loans.
  • Infrastructure: At full capacity, the dam is expected to generate approximately 6,000 megawatts of power.

2. Zimbabwe’s Renewable Energy Fund (REF)

Launched in late 2024, this fund represents a historic partnership between the UN Joint SDG Fund, the Zimbabwean government, and Old Mutual. It serves as a new model for financing designed to “light up” communities traditionally overlooked by investors. 

  • Impact: The fund utilizes a gender-responsive design to empower women and youth across the renewable energy value chain. It provides reliable energy to hospitals, schools, and farms, ensuring that social impact and financial returns go hand-in-hand.

  • Financing: It began with an initial $16 million (an $8 million match between the UN Joint SDG Fund and Old Mutual). The model is designed to attract $3 of follow-on capital for every $1 invested, with projections to grow to $30 million by the end of 2025 and $50 million by 2026.

  • Infrastructure: Focuses on distributed energy markets, enabling decentralized renewable sources to power entire communities.

3. Senegal’s Solar Electrification Initiative

Senegal has launched an 8 billion CFA franc (~$13 million) program to bring clean energy to over 30,000 people in remote regions including Matam, Saint-Louis, Louga, Kaffrine, and Tambacounda.

  • Impact: Aims to bridge the gap between urban electricity access (97.3%) and rural access (54.6%) to reach the national goal of universal electricity by 2029.
  • Infrastructure: Focuses on the installation and rehabilitation of solar PV mini-grids to provide decentralized, sustainable energy to underserved populations.

4. Rwanda: GenFarm Project (Electric Tractors)

Volkswagen Mobility Solutions Rwanda and the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) havelaunched the GenFarm Project at the RICA campus in Gashora in October 2024.

  • Impact: Aims to empower rural farmers with eco-friendly solutions, increasing productivity and reducing manual labor while promoting a carbon-neutral agricultural sector.
  • Infrastructure: Involves the introduction of cutting-edge electric tractors, starting with the handover of an MK1 Electric Tractor for farm trials and research.

5. Zimbabwe: Solar-Powered Healthcare Rollout

In a massive green energy initiative supported by the Global Fund and UNDP, 1,072 healthcare facilities in Zimbabwe have been equipped with solar power as of 2024. This transition ensures that critical medical services remain functional regardless of national grid stability.

  • Impact: The project saved 17,699 tonnes of CO2 in 2024 alone and significantly reduced operational costs. It has also boosted laboratory testing capacity by 300% since 2014, strengthening the country’s response to HIV, TB, and Malaria.
  • Infrastructure: Includes solar installations at clinics, hospitals, national laboratories, and medicine distribution warehouses to maintain the “cold chain” for life-saving drugs in remote areas.
  • Future Target: An additional 188 facilities are scheduled for solar upgrades by the end of 2025, which will bring green energy to 70% of all health facilities in the country.

6. Namibia: Africa’s First Integrated Green Hydrogen Plant

Namibia officially entered the global clean energy stage on September 18–19, 2025, with the inauguration of the Cleanergy Solutions Namibia Hydrogen Dune Project in Walvis Bay. This facility is a joint venture between the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group and Belgium’s CMB.TECH.

  • Impact: The project transforms Namibia into a regional hub for clean fuel. It creates a complete “seed-to-tank” ecosystem—producing, storing, and dispensing green hydrogen on-site. This significantly reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels and supports the country’s Vision 2030 for industrialization.
  • Infrastructure: 
    • Power Source: A dedicated 5MW solar park and a 5.9 MWh battery storage system allow the plant to operate off-grid.
    • Production: A 5MW PEM electrolyzer that splits water to produce green hydrogen.
    • Refuelling: A public refueling station that powers dual-fuel trucks, tractors, and port equipment.
    • Future Growth: Plans are already underway for a Hydrogen Academy to train local experts, and by 2026, the facility aims to fuel hydrogen-powered locomotives and ships.
